Theodor W. Adorno, una de las figuras más destacadas del efímero siglo XX, uno de los últimos exponentes del individuo burgués, uno de los últimos genios: desde su infancia en las postrimerías del siglo XIX, sus años escolares durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, su formación intelectual en Francfort, Viena, Berlín y Londres en el período de entreguerras, la experiencia del nacionalsocialismo y de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y el exilio en los Estados Unidos del New Deal, hasta su regreso a la Alemania de Adenauer y de la protesta estudiantil, en Adorno se concentra de forma ejemplar el «siglo de los extremos».
