Running throughout Wally Swist's numerous poems and publications is clear evidence of his lifelong dedication to observing the natural world. This practice in turn has influenced his extraordinary sense of perception and vision, so clearly at work in this collection, tested in all facets of life, from the most mundane ('Mall Walker') to the natural ('Ode to the Holyoke Range') to the political ('Ringmaster of the Ridiculous') to the eternal ('A Mystical Unfoldment'). Swist's powers of observation have led him to see the threads that connect all of it, and that is precisely the point . . . those threads are 'The Map of Eternity' where we are 'mesmerized with wonder' and 'in awe of the wonder of what is.'

    K D Halliwell
The ambiguously titled Love Bites is the debut offering from K D Halliwell, a Milton Keynes based author who describes the collection as a document of her twenties. Original and with a format that stands out from the ordinary, it is proving particularly well-received by those who “don’t normally like poetry”. Originally written by hand, the author has traversed a fine line betw...

  • Polishing the Silver
    Jennifer Chrystie
‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

  • One Kiss
    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

  • Taking Residence

Rainer Maria Rilke wrote in a letter-later collected in the posthumous book Letters to a Young Poet-that a writer always has a storehouse of inspiration to draw upon from childhood memories. Wally Swist’s seventeenth full-length collection of poetry, Taking Residence, begins with poems regarding childhood memories and, in quite a symphonic manner, concludes with them. A collect...

  • Candling the Eggs
    Wally Swist
Acclaimed poet Wally Swist remarks on events of everyday living in this brilliant collection. 'The Female Cardinal,' 'Ray's Sandwich Shop,' 'Ode to My New Shoes,' and, of course, 'Candling the Eggs' show us how to notice the value in commonplace events. Yet, there is more, as we see in 'What is Essential' and 'Abhorrence;' living calls for action. Of over thirty books and c...
