The book contains several long poems that explore historical events, including the League of the Alps, a defensive alliance formed by several Swiss cantons in the 14th century; the Siege of Valencia, a battle between the forces of King James I of Aragon and the Muslim forces of Valencia in the 13th century; and the Vespers of Palermo, a rebellion against French rule in Sicily in the 13th century. Hemans also includes shorter poems on a variety of subjects, including nature, love, and loss. The poems are written in a romantic style, with vivid imagery and emotional language.
