Reflections on love, loss and the play of poetic imagination recur in this collection. In one of the two free verse works, ‘The Passing Poem’, these unite. This poem was something I felt compelled to write after attending the funerals of two friends. Both times I was struck by how people who might not normally read poetry, let alone write it, composed poems to express their grief and love. For any poet who has doubted their calling (I among them), this was a timely reminder of poetry’s ability to articulate truths in situations, particularly emotionally charged ones, which could not otherwise be as meaningfully expressed. After much travail then, and two funerals too many, I hope this offspring of my labours will make its way into the world, find friends and grow in wisdom through the years.

    K D Halliwell
The ambiguously titled Love Bites is the debut offering from K D Halliwell, a Milton Keynes based author who describes the collection as a document of her twenties. Original and with a format that stands out from the ordinary, it is proving particularly well-received by those who “don’t normally like poetry”. Originally written by hand, the author has traversed a fine line betw...

    Jennifer Chrystie
‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

  • One Kiss
    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

  • Love Letters to the World
    George Genovese
Desire in its multifariously limpid and obscure manifestations is one of the salient themes that informs many of the poems in this collection, from the way it is experienced in its recognisably subjective forms as longing, love or intention, to the more challenging notion of its expression as artefact – the objective creations of daily use such as cups, tables, books and money....

A number of the works in this collection centre on the notion of ’the journey’. In all instances, it is ultimately an inner personal one, psychic or spiritual in nature in accordance with whatever term best resonates with the reader. For the author, the journey is a search for meaning, a place of habitation and belonging, of reflective respite away from the round of daily strug...

  • The Bookworm
    George Genovese
While most of the characters you’ll meet in these pages are far from perfect, and, with all their anxieties, foibles and frailties, a world away from being heroic, they are recognisably human. What they lack in polish or perfection they more than abundantly make up for in inconspicuous generosity and modesty, much too often under-appreciated for the ramifications these quieter ...

Just as importantly, parents unaccompanied by children will not have anyone s...

  • Time Steals Softer

The theme of time and its associated expressions of mutability, limitation and loss figures prominently in this collection. The title poem is an attempted objectification, one could say personification, of time which ultimately overturns any of the parallels drawn between it and the figures adduced as its visible representatives to stand in any symmetrical relationship. In the ...
