De la guerra del 98 a la Guerra Fría, este libro sobre el Caribe hispano es un recorrido por ciudades e ideas, por intelectuales y debates, en un arco analítico que tipifica las preocupaciones centrales de la nueva historia intelectual en América Latina. A propósito de Nueva York, Martí y Henríquez Ureña, anota Díaz Quiñones que 'la memoria de la ciudad funciona por sus omisiones tanto como por sus afirmaciones'. Habría entonces que agregar que este es también un libro sobre la memoria, la practicada por aquellos letrados y la invocada por el propio Díaz Quiñones en sus semblanzas y lecturas. No de otra manera podía ser tratándose del autor de Cintio Vitier: la memoria integradora (1987) y La memoria rota (1993).El lector sale de Sobre los principios con una imagen del Caribe hispano muy ajena a los postulados identificatorios tradicionales. No es la religión, ni la lengua o la raza el elemento aglutinador de la comunidad. Tampoco lo es el alma, el espíritu o la ideología de cualquiera de los nacionalismos de los dos últimos siglos. Son, en todo caso, la guerra y la memoria de sujetos históricos diversos, en su interminable lucha por la representación, las que dotan de un sentido comunitario a la región.
