Todos los musulmanes aceptan que las bases del Islam son el Libro y la Sunna, y casi todos admiten que si alguien sigue las enseñanzas de uno de los cuatro madhhabs ortodoxos del Islam -Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi’i y Hanbali- estará sin duda viviendo bajo los parámetros del Libro y la Sunnah. La gran mayoría de los musulmanes siguen uno u otro de estos madhhabs pero, para casi todos ellos, esta afiliación ocurre por meras razones geográficas, siendo muy pocos los que saben lo suficiente sobre la naturaleza del madhhab al que pertenecen. Hay una percepción generalizada de que los madhhabs son más o menos lo mismo y que sólo se difieren en cuestiones legales de tipo menor. Pero esto no explica en absoluto la razón de la existencia de estos cuatro madhhabs. Para revelar la razón de su existencia es necesario estudiar cada uno de ellos y estudiar cómo y por qué aparecieron en primer lugar. 10
