Llanto por una aljama toma como punto de partida la expulsión de los judíos por la invasión de los almohades en el año 1148 y como protagonista al joven Jared. Desde sus días de juventud y entusiasmo hasta sus últimos años, seguimos la vida de este extraordinario personaje y de un no menos interesante periodo histórico de Eliossana, en el que las traiciones e intrigas estaban a la orden del día. La vida de Jared le sirve al autor para describirnos minuciosamente los acontecimientos históricos más relevantes y describirnos la compleja convivencia entre judíos, musulmanes y cristianos (violencia, trifulcas religiosas…) e incluso adentrarnos en la vida interior de determinados personajes a los que, como en un calidoscopio, vemos pasar por las hojas del libro. Así vamos descubriendo al gran Maimónides, a Gabirol y sus poemas, al también poeta Judá Haleví o a Ibn Megas y Alfasí, sabios maestros. El autor se aleja del falso mito de «las tres culturas», pero sin caer en el negacionismo de la convivencia entre los diversos grupos que integraban la sociedad andalusí. En este libro se aúnan de manera magistral la ficción con el rigor histórico. Llanto por una aljama es una novela de carácter históricocostumbrista que nos ayudará, sin lugar a dudas, a ampliar los conocimientos que tenemos de este pasado judío de la ciudad de los poetas, de Eliossana, un foco cultural, artístico, social y económico de primer orden, un territorio que, en definitiva, sería la Perla de Sefarad.
