En 1936, a pocos meses de que estallara la Guerra Civil, Antonio Machado publica Juan de Mairena. Sentencias, donaires, apuntes y recuerdos de un profesor apócrifo, un libro en prosa que reúne una serie de ensayos publicados en el Diario de Madrid desde 1934. La obra apareció primero por entregas en este periódico a partir del 4 de noviembre y después en El Sol, hasta que finalmente se publicó en formato de libro en mayo de 1936. Con Juan de Mairena, Machado, figura clave de la Generación del 98, se reivindica como uno de los prosistas más originales del siglo XX, ya que emplea al ficticio profesor Juan de Mairena, inventado a finales de la década de los años 20, para trasladar sus pensamientos al lector. Se trata de una auto caricatura del propio autor, nacido en Sevilla en 1865, a quien Machado describe como poeta, filósofo, retórico e inventor de una Máquina de Cantar y alumno de otro autor apócrifo, el maestro Abel Martín, también sevillano, nacido en 1840 y fallecido en Madrid en 1898.?
