La batalla del Campo de la Verdad, como es conocida hoy en día en Córdoba, fue un hito en la historia de la ciudad, que marcó muchos de sus lugares con sus nombres actuales, así como algunos de los prejuicios más arraigados acerca de Córdoba y sus habitantes.Esta novela trata de actualizar aquel episodio, bebiendo de tradiciones que lo mantuvieron vivo, como los relatos de Rafael de Vida y de Teodomiro Ramírez de Arellano.Los protagonistas son los Páez, una familia de conquistadores de Córdoba, aquellos que recuperaron la ciudad para la cristiandad en 1236 y la entregaron posteriormente al rey San Fernando. Sin embargo, por diversas experiencias que se entremezclan con la misma historia de Castilla en el siglo XIV, sus vidas y opiniones difieren bastante de las de su entorno social: amigos de los judíos, de la industria y el comercio, y abiertos a las corrientes de un incipiente renacimiento que apunta ya en Occidente. Alonso Páez relata en primera persona su historia y la de los suyos, que culmina durante la guerra civil que asoló España durante la mayor parte del reinado de Pedro I de Castilla. Dicho conflicto tuvo un punto culminante en la batalla de Córdoba del año 1368, en la que quedó sellado el destino de la Corona.
