Whitman escribió 'Días ejemplares' en la vejez con el propósito de dejar constancia de lo que había sido su vida en unos momentos muy convulsos de la historia de los Estados Unidos. Con motivo de un viaje a la tierra de sus antepasados, concibió el proyecto autobiográfico del que ya había escrito la parte de la Guerra Civil. Además, utilizó fragmentos de sus colaboraciones periodísticas que trataban del viaje que hizo al oeste del país y donde encontró el alma y la energía de los estadounidenses. Esta edición presenta, por primera vez en España, el texto completo del libro e incluye los años de infancia y juventud en Brooklyn, los años que pasó como voluntario en los hospitales de Washington durante la Guerra Civil, la estancia en el campo para recuperarse de la hemiplejía que sufrió y su viaje al oeste. Acompañan a la traducción una introducción que situa en el contexto histórico y literario de la época estos 'Días ejemplares', y notas a pie de página que pretenden despejar las dudas culturales, históricas y textuales que el texto suscita.
