DeProfundis es una sola carta íntima de Oscar Wilde para su joven amante lord Alfred Douglas, bajo el nombre de Bosie en la carta, en la que realiza una introspección, nada preciosista en comparación a otras obras suyas, pero compleja pues en ella analiza la personalidad de su amado y busca una causa para explicar su comportamiento, lo cual le ha puesto en la situación en la que se encuentra: encarcelado por homosexual dos años en la cárcel de Reading. Su amante se aprovecha de la situación económica de Oscar Wilde, quien no solo es consciente de ello, sino que es puesto en sobreaviso por su madre, sin embargo, irremediablemente le ha llevado a la quiebra. Es por ello que personaliza el Amor, el Odio, el Dolor, el Sufrimiento, la Sociedad y el Individualismo y lo representa tipográficamente al escribir estas palabras con la inicial mayúscula. Estos sentimientos representan un antes y un después en su relación con lordAlfred Douglas, con quien ya no mantiene relación porque él, según sabemos por su misiva, ha dejado de escribirle hace más de un año. Esta carta permite reflexionar al lector sobre todo sobre las relaciones amorosas y de amistad en las que, insiste Oscar Wilde ya desengañado, el aprecio y la valoración deben ser mutuas, por ello tiene la intención de perdonarle, pero para ello le exige una explicación sincera, pues explica que este perdón no será como los anteriores, sino mucho más valioso.
