Esta novela histórica sobre China abarca: el proceso de la revolución cultural, el gran juicio contra la esposa de Mao Zedong, la intervención de grupos de cooperantes extranjeros en ese proceso encarcelados como espías cuatro y hasta cinco años y la política de apertura al exterior y las reformas económicas. El hotel de la Amistad fue ocupado, en los años 60 del siglo pasado, por dos centenares de especialistas que trabajaban en radio, prensa escrita, institutos y universidades. De los habitantes de dicho hotel y sus descendientes procede una comunidad que anda regada por los cinco continentes con el nombre de Comunidad del hotel de la Amistad; ellos son protagonistas de esta obra. El narrador omnisciente parte de su propia biografía, con la llegada a Pekín en los comienzos de 1965 junto a su esposa y dos hijos menores, para proyectarla sobre lo sucedido en China durante casi medio siglo. Destacan entre los hitos históricos: el gran salto adelante y la comuna popular. Cuando se repasa el gran juicio realizado en 1981 contra la esposa de Mao Zedong y se la escucha gritar: «Yo fui la perra guardiana del presidente Mao», uno no sabe si condenarla o compadecerla.
